Elano Blumer proved a bang for Chennaiyin FC last Season. He had an injury proven ISL last season but the Brazilian finished as Golden Boot with Eight Goals. This year, the 34-year-old midfielder would be looking to surpass the mark.
Elano, Spoke with TOI about his expectations from the second edition of the ISL, how he wants to become the best among the Brazilians and about his equation with Fikru Teferra, the second highest-scorer last season.
You are the only marquee player who has been retained by a franchise. Does that put you under pressure to perform?
There is absolutely no pressure on me. I have been playing for years now. I have always played freely and it was the same in ISL. There will be no difference in my playing style in this edition also. We have a fantastic team and I hope I can help Chennaiyin FC the way I did last season.
You won the Golden Boot in ISL last season. How do you look back at your performance?
I was just doing my duty last season. I was here to do a job and I was happy with the way I performed. It is a new start this year and I would definitely try to surpass the eight-goal mark and score more goals.
This season, you will face tough competition from teammate Fikru, who was the second highest scorer with 5 goals last year.
I share a good equation with Fikru. I am now getting to know Fikru better, both on and off the field. I am trying to understand how he plays. With him being a fantastic No. 9, I hope to assist him and help him score goals.
ISL has attracted a lot of Brazilians, including legends like Roberto Carlos and Lucio this year. How do you think the Brazilians are impacting Indian football?
First of all, having so many Brazilians in the tournament is a positive sign because it is going to improve the quality of Indian football. Secondly , most of the Brazilians playing in the ISL are my friends. I wish everyone success. But then, when it comes to performance on the field and competition, I hope they all come second best behind me.
