Australia vs Sri Lanka Postmatch

The most awaited match for both the teams has come to an end. The match was won by the Australian team and have got the berth for the Quarterfinals. Both the teams played well today. There were nearly 700 runs scored today. Was a great match and a superb contest.

1st Innings
It was the Australian captain Michael Clarke who won the toss and elected to bat first. The Australians did not get a great start but then their innings was held well by Steve Smith and Michael Clarke. They both got a partnership above hundred runs and stabled the innings. But then they both got out. It was then the two new batsmen Maxwell and Watson to make their mark and play out of their skins to get a big total. They did so and stiched a big partnership. Maxwell did his job of smashing the ball to all parts of the ground. He scored his maiden century for Australia and was an emotional one for him. He scored 102(54) balls with 10 boundaries and 4 sixes. On the other hand Shane Watson who was demoted to middle order played a good and complimenting innings to that of Maxwell. He scored 67(41) balls with 7 boundaries and 2 sixes. Both took the Australian score to 372 runs and gave a huge target of 373 runs to the Lankans. Sri Lanka bowled well but not as well as they would have liked. They did not give many extras but some dropped catches proved to be expensive. Their pick of the bowlers was Lasith Malinga with bowling figures of 10-0-59-2.

2nd Innings
Sri Lanka did bat well but they couldn't win the match. They lost an early wicket in the form of Thirimanne but had the dangerous Dilshan and Sangakara on the pitch. They both started to build a much needed partnership and took it to above 100 runs. They both reached their half centuries but Dilshan was out later. Sangakara who is the run machine for the Sri Lankans completed 14000 runs in ODI career and then went on to make a 3rd successive century in the World Cup. The first ever batsman to do so. He was then out and then their team fell apart as they were all out for 312 runs. The Aussie bowlers were tested but they were better for the Sri Lankan side. They bowled superbly and their pick of the bowlers was James Faulkner with bowling figures of 9-0-48-3.

Man Of The Match- Glenn Maxwell
