According to the official VFL site:
VfL were convincing 3-0 winners over Hoffenheim.
The World Cup winner’s debut was a complete success and VfL Wolfsburg remain on course for a Champions League qualifying place. On Bundesliga match day 20, the Wolves played host to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in front of a crowd of 26,356 in the Volkswagen Arena and ran out comfortable 3-0 (2-0) winners, thanks to goals from Bas Dost (3‘) and a Kevin De Bruyne brace (28’, 84’). The first two goals fell following assists from the Green-Whites new signing, André Schürrle, on his debut for the club
Dream start for Schürrle
VfL coach Dieter Hecking made just one change to the eleven that began in the 1-1 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt in mid-week. Fort he injured Ivan Perisic (gluteal muscle strain), new signing Schürrle began on the left wing. The fans at the Volkswagen Arena barely had time to take to their beats before they were on their feet again and celebrating. In spite of the best defensive efforts of both Andreas Beck and Nadiem Amiri, Schürrle cross in for Bas Dost to force home from close range (3‘). The new man almost marked his debut with a goal of his own just twelve minutes later, combining with Dost and rounding keeper Oliver Baumann to slot his shot homewards, but Beck slid in at the last moment to turn the ball away for a corner (16‘).
De Bruyne heads home
Following a neat headed lay-back from Daniel Caligiuri, Schürrle let fly from 15 meters out, cracking his shot off the crossbar, but De Bruyne reacted quickest to the loose ball and headed home from eleven meters out to make it 2-0 (28‘). The hosts took their advantage into the break.
Benaglio‘s stunning stops
In the second period, the guests from Hoffenheim upped the tempo and managed to put the Wolves under some pressure. TSG looked to find a way back into the tie and had a good chance after 69 minutes, with Roberto Firmino being denied by VfL keeper Diego Benaglio from ten meters out. Just two minutes later, the Swiss shot-stopper was called into action one again, to make a strong save from Anthony Modeste (71’).
De Bruyne’s next brace In the 84th minute, De Bruyne then struck once again, to all but decide the destination of the points. Schürrle cut out an 1899 attack, spreading the play to Bas Bost, who in turn passed to De Bruyne. The Belgian powered forward and let fly with a right-footed drive from 17 meters out, sinking the ball in the far corner of the net, to make the final score 3-0 for VfL. In the end, it was a convincing and well deserved win for the Wolves.
FINAL RESULT: WOLFSBURG 3 : 0 HOFFENHIEM
