Kevin Volland capitalised on a mistake from David Alaba to open the scoring after only nine seconds at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena. His strike equalled the record set by Bayer Leverkusen's Karim Bellarabi a year ago on Sunday for the Bundesliga's fastest ever goal.Bayern recovered until the team went to the dressing room for the first time as Thomas Muller took his tally of Bundesliga League goals this season to three, after netting twice when Munich trashed Hamburg.Muller and Arturo Vidal were denied by the woodwork.
Hoffenheim had a chance to beat Bayern for the first time ever when Jerome Boateng conceded a penalty for handball and was sent off, but Eugen Polanski hit the post with the kick and keeper Manuel Neuer landed on the rebound to keep it out.
Boateng's dismissal was for a second booking - having also been shown a yellow card for another handball 90 seconds earlier.
Robben was replaced by Thiago Alcantara just before the hour-mark and it looked to be only a matter of time before the champions took the lead, as again the summer recruit Dougals Costa had a cross put in by Lewandowski.
