Rajeev Shukla: Exclusive Interview

Since last two days the Indian Premier League (IPL) might be in the eye of wrangling, but Rajeev Shukla the chairman insisted that the IPL brand remains a "robust" product and then continued up by saying that he is confident that in next season the tournament will make a strong comeback with a minimum of eight teams.

When questioned about the future of the competition and the two-year ban on Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, Shukla answered, "We are always concerned about IPL and let me assure you the next edition will be a bigger success. IPL is a robust product and this judgement (suspension of teams) should not affect IPL as a product."

Chairman also made it clear that the competition will not go ahead with only six teams. "The idea is to have the tournament in full format with a minimum of eight teams. We can't hold the event with six teams."

Although there are many alternative available with reference to what happens next to the IPL, on Sunday they will be thoroughly discussed only with the Governing Council in Mumbai, Shukla told to PTI.

"There are many options available and we will discuss them all in the meeting on Sunday. One option is that BCCI runs the two teams and responsible people will be deputed for the job," he added.

Shukla was further questioned whether BCCI taking control over CSK and RR might cause a possible conflict of interest, but Shukla maintained it wasn't so and then he refused to answered when asked about CSK and RR being banned for life.

"There is no question of any conflict of interest. BCCI is anyway supervising the IPL. There are two main areas: one is players' auction which is transparent and the other is managing teams. Credible people can be deputed to do the managing job."

When questioned whether the Kochi franchise which was terminated after the 2011 season, will be reinstated but Shukla did not give a clear answer. He said, "the arbitrator has given the verdict and we are going to appeal after seeking legal opinion. I can't say anything more as the matter is under litigation."

Shukla accentuate that the IPL Governing Council will carefully consider the Lodha Committee report on Sunday and only then take a call on further action.

"We will deliberate on their report in the meeting. After that, a sub-group will be constituted and it will study the report. Based on that, we will decide how the report will be implemented," he added.
