New York Red Bulls vs Sporting KC-Postmatch


The New York Red Bulls  opened the 2015 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Sporting Kansas City on Sunday at Sporting Park in Kansas City.

New York Red Bulls:- Luis Robles, Chris Duvall, Ronald Zubar (Matt Miazga 77'), Damien Perrinelle, Roy Miller, Lioyd Sam, Dax McCarty, Felipe (Anatole Abang 84'), Sacha Kljestan, Mike Grella (Sal Zizzo 68') Bradley Wright-Phillips

Sporting KC:- Luis Marin, Amadou Dia, Ike Opara, Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic, Benny Feilhaber, Roger Espinoza, Graham Zusi (Eric Palmer-Brown 84'), Krisztian Nemeth (Jacob Peterson 77'), Bernardo Anor (Nagamura 61'), Dorn Dwyer.

Opara out since last march from a defect fracture in his right ankle, scored in his return to competition with Sporting KC. This was third meeting between this two teams, after the Red Bulls won the 2014 regular season final and EC knockout round.

The first half showed the kind of battle Sporting would fight against a skill full New York Red Bulls center midfield. Both sides came storng and traded chances in the first half. Sporting's keeper Luis Marin made a coupkes of good saves in the first half.

Grella was back on the attack minutes later, cutting down the left side of the box, but his shot went off the outside of the netting. Sporting KC opened the scoring in the 50th minute when like Opara headed in Benny Feilhaber's cross. Four minutes later Lioyd Sam bent in a shot from distance and cut back on his defender, took one touch and sent in a goal from outside the 18 yard box.

Matt Besler was shown his second yellow card and sent off for a challenge and Sporting had to play a man down after the 70th minute. New York gets the advantage over the next 20 minutes but Red Bulls failed to score in the final 20 minutes against a 10-man Sporting side.

Down Dwyer's miss in the 89th minute was the best chance Sporting would receive all night, but Dwyer couldn't knock the ball in at the back post. Dwyer had a second chance in the 91st minute, running onto a long ball behind the defense, but Robles got himself in front of the shot to preserve the draw and the point.

Sporting fought for its chances in the dying moments of the match but came away with a draw.
